Evaluate Your Current Bedroom

Before creating your sleep sanctuary, first evaluate your current bedroom environment and determine what works.and what doesn’t. But what do you look for? How can you tell if your bedroom is or isn’t conducive to quality sleep? While many sleep-robbing factors are evident, some are so obvious that we tend to overlook them day-to-day.

It is important to take a step back and carefully analyze your sleeping space. The best way to do this is to trust your gut and merely follow your senses…

Light

Sunlight is a natural, positive source of energy during the day, but it can disrupt deep, restful sleep. Light – such as the rising sun – is one of the body’s most powerful time cues and can wake up the brain long before the alarm goes off.

Ask yourself:
When sleeping, is your room as dark as possible?
Is there light coming through blinds or curtains in the early morning hours?
Are the TV or hallway lights left on while you are sleeping?
Is your alarm clock brightly illuminated and facing you throughout the night?

Touch

Comfort and support are key. The most critical component of any bedroom is the bed itself. Your mattress should not only meet your needs for comfort and support, but it should also be considered a major investment…and one that you make every 5 – 7 years. To top it off, it’s the soft textures of a bedroom that help make it cozy and inviting.

Ask yourself:
If you sleep with a partner, what size bed do you share?
Have you had your mattress for more than 5 – 7 years?
Do you wake up regularly with aches and pains?
Have you had a better night’s sleep somewhere other than your own bed (such as a hotel)?
How does the texture of your bedding make you feel?
Does your mattress or bedding show visible signs of wear and tear?

Smell

All homes have a unique aroma. Smells often subconsciously connect us to certain memories or moods. Some people may have an ability to block out unpleasant odors, but it still may have an impact on you throughout the night. Additionally, there are certain scents, like lavender, that help promote sleep and well-being.

Ask yourself:
Are there certain scents that make you feel especially calm and relaxed?
Do you occasionally ‘air out’ your bedroom and/or allow in fresh air?
Does your detergent and/or fabric softener have a negative or positive impact on sleep?

Taste

Your bedroom is a true reflection of yourself. It should provide the ultimate comfort and support and be an invitingly special space. Your bedroom is where you begin and end each day, so it’s important to make it intimate and personal, but also keep it simple and uncluttered.

Ask yourself:
Is your bedroom well-organized?
Do you use your bedroom as a workspace or eating area?
Is there clutter or excess décor or clothing that could be removed?
Do you feel your bedroom adequately reflects your taste and personality?
Is your bedroom the first and last place you want to see every day?

Have you ever realized that we spend about one third part of our lives in our bedrooms? It is the first place we see as soon as we wake up in the morning. In fact, we carry out all our day-to-day activities in our bedrooms, whether it be reading books, listening to music or simply relaxing on our cozy comfy beds.

Since we do most of the things in our bedroom, then why not make our bedroom a cozy and warm place by selecting the right bedroom furniture. Choosing furniture for your bedroom requires careful planning and many factors need to be considered like bedroom interiors, expenditure, personal taste etc.

Bedroom Furniture Buying Tips

  • Never compromise on quality, even if you have to pay an extra price for it.
  • Go in for a durable piece of furniture and not for the one that is just attractive, but not long lasting.
  • Give due importance to fine craftsmanship, as it will also ensure the durability and save your repair expenses.
  • While shopping for bedroom furniture, place a higher importance on comfort than anything else.
  • Pay attention to what all you do in your bedroom. Are your activities in your bedroom just limited to sleeping or you do perform other activities like reading books while in bed? If that is the case, then you must buy such bedroom furniture that can accommodate a moderate size lamp that can provide you with adequate light to read during the nighttime.

With most products, it’s fairly obvious when a replacement is needed. If it no longer works or has signs of wear and tear that impair its ability, you know its time for a new one.

However, realizing that it is time for a new mattress and foundation isn’t always so obvious. Similar to your favorite old chair or worn pair of shoes, your mattress can still feel comfortable long after it has lost its ability to provide your body with the proper support and comfort it needs.

Because sleep is so critical to our ability to function and feel our best, it is important to evaluate your sleep set on a regular basis.

Signs that you need a new mattress:

  • You wake up with stiffness, numbness, aches and pains
  • You had a better night’s sleep somewhere other than your own bed (such as a hotel)
  • Your mattress shows visible signs of overuse (it sags, has lumps, the interior is exposed, etc.)
  • Your mattress is 5 – 7 years old*

*How long a mattress will last depends on several factors, such as amount of use and original quality, but in general, a mattress set that has been in use 5-7 years is no longer providing you with the best comfort and support. Keep in mind that people’s bodies change over time, and the need for good comfort and support only increases with age. That’s why it’s a good idea to compare the mattress and foundation you are sleeping on now to newer models every few years.

Way too many of us crawl slowly from our beds each morning stiff, sore, and aching.  We blame it on our age, “overdoing it” the day before on some unaccustomed task, or maybe we use the catch-all term “bad back.”  All of these could play a role…but it could be something as simple as a worn-out or improper mattress.

The conventional wisdom for years was that “firmer is better” when it came to mattresses.  This led to people sleeping on beds as unyielding as a marble slab…and all too often, paying a price for it.  Think of it this way…if you bought a pair of shoes that didn’t “break in,” how comfortable would they be?  Not very.  Fortunately, we’ve learned some important lessons about bedding after years of research.

  • A mattress must CONFORM to the sleeper to provide comfort and support (Sealy PosturePedic is the ONLY mattress actually designed by orthopedic surgeons, by the way.)
  • “Pressure points” -especially at the hips and shoulders- caused by a hard surface cause you to toss and turn in search of relief…leaving you no chance for restful, restorative sleep.
  • Regardless of the length of a mattress warranty, the actual “comfort life” of most mattresses -even the most expensive-is eight to ten years.  This can vary a bit either way depending on the size of the sleepers and the amount of use the mattress gets; a person who is infirm and spends a lot of time in bed will, obviously, need to replace the mattress more often.  How old is YOURS?

You spend more time using a mattress than any other item of home furnishings.  The quality of sleep provided by your mattress has more influence on your overall health than anything else in your home.  It is NOT the place to scrimp on price; you need the best, most comfortable mattress that you can afford.

Shopping for a new mattress requires some work on your part.  Make an honest assessment of how you sleep; know what interrupts your sleep or makes you uncomfortable.  Take a look at your bed and be sure it can provide proper support for the mattress and foundation…all mattress manufacturers require that queen and king beds have legs under the center of the bed or frame – today’s mattresses are not lightweights.

After you’ve done your homework, visit a reputable bedding retailer.  You’ll find conventional innerspring mattresses, latex foam, and visco-elastic (memory) foam products in most showrooms.  You can get assistance from factory-trained professionals with years of experience who can help you select a mattress that will positively affect your sleep habits.  Bowen Town & Country Furniture in Winston-Salem, NC is an authorized dealer for Sealy, Tempur-Pedic, and Carolina Mattress Guild.  We offer FREE delivery and disposal of your old set within 100 miles of our store.  We’ve got a good night’s sleep waiting for you!

Clinical Results on Back Pain

Many consumers and healthcare professionals realize that a mattress is an important part in back pain relief and remedying sleep disorders.

Only recently have there been studies to indicate what kind of mattresses make a difference in back pain relief. Studies have shown that indeed the right mattress can give back pain relief and improves sleep for lower back pain sufferers.

Mattress Firmness – Very Firm Is Not Always Good
Many consumers and medical professionals believe that a firm mattress gives back pain relief, lower back pain in particular. It is commonly preferred compared to a medium firmness or soft mattress although there has been no research to support the idea that they help neck pain, back pain and lower back pain.

In an article in The Lancet in 2003, by Francisco M Kovacs, et.al., on lower back pain, researchers found that a mattress of medium firmness improves pain and disability among patients with chronic non-specific lower back pain.

Tempur-Pedic Mattresses™ Reduce Lower Back Pain
A soon to be published study by the researchers at Bridgeport Hospital, part of Yale New Haven Health, comparing Tempur-Pedic Mattresses with an inner spring, found that mattress type does affect sleep architecture and that sleeping on the Tempur-Pedic improves sleep and gives back pain relief for those suffering back pain. Colds and the flu can be passed quickly from person to person, so it’s important to keep your immune system as healthy as possible. Getting quality sleep, eating a healthy diet and being physically active help prepare your body for warding off potential viruses and bacteria you may encounter. Here are some tips from the BSC and Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), to keep your immune system healthy:

– Get 7.5 hours of quality sleep. Sleep is our body’s natural restoration process. Make sleep a priority by keeping a consistent sleep (bedtime) and wake schedule, including weekends. And be sure to choose the right mattress for your needs—a quality, comfortable, supportive and right size mattress is key to healthy sleep. Experts recommend that you evaluate your mattress annually, and consider replacing it every five to seven years for the best sleep comfort and quality support.

– Drink at least six to eight glasses of water daily. The sinus, throat and lungs are all equipped with immune functions that can stop bacteria and viruses in their tracks. Well hydrated tissues help this function, while dehydrated tissues can make you more at risk for illness.

– Exercise regularly. Exercise conditions the body and helps support a health immune system. Try to complete workouts at least two hours before bedtime to avoid restlessness at night.

– Eat a well-balanced diet. Be sure to get your daily five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables, which are loaded with important nutrients and antioxidants to keep you healthy.

– Supplement your diet. Vitamins and other dietary supplements are good for your overall well-being. Before taking any supplements, be sure to consult your healthcare professional and always follow label directions. According to CRN, certain supplements may help promote a healthy immune system:

    • Take a daily multivitamin. Falling short of essential nutrients can weaken your immune system. A daily multivitamin is a good insurance policy to ensure you’re getting all of the nutrients you need!
    • Get your sunshine vitamin (vitamin D). As the day light hours get shorter, there is less sunlight and the body produces less vitamin D. Studies have shown that lower levels of vitamin D are associated with an increased risk for respiratory infections. Since getting enough vitamin D from food alone can be difficult, many experts recommend that people consider a vitamin D supplement.
    • Some research suggests that botanicals such as Echinacea and elderberry support immune function and may be beneficial for cold and flu. Specific vitamins and minerals have also been shown to support immune functions, such as vitamin C and zinc.

For more information and additional tips to help guard your health, visit the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at www.cdc.gov. If you suspect you have a cold or the flu, talk to your doctor or a healthcare professional.

Each night, too many Americans get poor or inadequate sleep. And each day, sleep deprived employees go to work unaware of the toll that poor sleep is taking on their productivity and job satisfaction. To uncover the extent to which restless nights are affecting employees, the Better Sleep Council (BSC) recently sponsored a national sleep and work productivity survey. Key findings include:

Burning the midnight oil = Burning out at work?

Eight-in-ten consumers report at least one negative side-effect of getting a poor night’s sleep. Most notably, worker say sleep deprivation impairs:

  • Quality and accuracy of work (31 percent)
  • Clear thinking or judgment (31 percent)
  • Remembering important details (30 percent)
  • Co-worker or customer relationships (23 percent)
  • Punctuality to work and/or meetings (21 percent)

Sleepless in America

  • Only a fraction (27 percent) of Americans get the recommended 8 hours of sleep each work week night. (7.5 to 8.5 is optimal)
  • 17 percent of Americans claim they only get 5 hours of sleep Monday through Friday. Studies show that getting five hours of sleep a night for one week induces an impairment level equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.1 percent; that’s considered legally drunk in most states.

Physically present, mentally absent

While an overwhelming majority of workers (74 percent) say they would physically remain at work and would be unlikely to leave early when suffering from sleep deprivation, most report effects in mental alertness:

  • Being in a bad mood and unfriendly (44 percent)
  • Yawning and often feeling likely to fall asleep at work (39 percent)
  • Having lapses in judgment and difficulty remembering info (36 percent)
  • Finding themselves “spacing out” (33 percent)

Americans shut-eyed to sleep basics

When feeling sleepy during the day, only 13 percent of Americans say they would make an effort to get more shut-eye at night to feel more awake and productive during the day; they are turning instead to:

  • Caffeine Jolt. Drink coffee, soda or other caffeinated drinks (33 percent)
  • Fresh Air. Go outside for fresh air (18 percent)
  • Siesta Solution. Take a nap during the day (17 percent)
  • Work-it-Out. Exercise during the day (9 percent)

New bedding systems provided both immediate and sustained benefits in sleep. Participants noted an increased improvement in sleep quality each week, all attributed to the new mattresses.
