bucks county furniture

Remember going to Grandma’s house?  If yours was like mine, the place was furnished almost exclusively with really old furniture…some good, some bad.  Sprinkled in the mix were some pieces that had some special significance…the chest great-great-grandpa built before the Yankees got him at Gettysburg…that kind of thing.

A lot of those old antique furniture pieces look great…from a distance.  When you examine them closely, you’ll find that the years may not have been kind.  Looking terrific isn’t enough for furniture you actually plan to use.  The piece has got to be sturdy enough to stand up to the rigors of use by a busy family…and most antiques can’t meet that requirement.

If you want the look of a fine hand-crafted antique but need something you can use on a daily basis, there IS a solution.  Bucks County Furniture -a very small Pennsylvania company- makes what I refer to as “new” antiques.  Using techniques from years gone by such as hand-planing the lumber and assembling pieces with cut nails and pegs, Bucks County turns pine, cherry, and tiger maple into tomorrow’s heirlooms -today.

And make no mistake…other than a single chair that they have made in a small Canadian workshop, EVERY piece of Bucks County is proudly hand-made in America.  Take a look at Bucks County Furniture .  You’ll think you’re looking at museum pieces…but it’s furniture you can use every day – and a piece or two can work with ANY decor.

Every Henkel Harris piece of furniture exhibits the same degree of craftsmanship utilizing the finest materials during our manufacturing process.

As a result, it is no coincidence that you need to exert very little effort to preserve its beauty once it arrives at your home. If you understand the nature of the wood and finish of your furniture, and take heed to these simple recommendations for its maintenance, you will enjoy your investment for a lifetime.

Solid wood reacts to the amount of humidity in your home. Long periods of heat, without added moisture, will dry wood and cause splitting and weakening of the glue joints. We recommend between 35% and 40% relative humidity during cold, dry months. It is equally important not to expose your furniture to excessively damp areas without providing a dehumidifier.

Certainly most of today’s heating and cooling systems maintain the home at the acceptable levels mentioned, but it is important for you to be aware of these conditions and take the appropriate action to prevent needless damage. Be thoughtful, too, when arranging furniture in your home. Direct sunlight will bleach the wood and may cause the lacquer to crack. In addition, it is important to avoid direct contact with alcohol, perfume, fingernail polish and remover, hairspray and plastic products (such as doilies). These can soften the lacquer and contribute to finish discoloration and deterioration.

The more you know about your furniture, the greater your satisfaction will be. It was crafted to give you years of useful service and, more importantly, pride of ownership. Should it become necessary to require a repair, always rely on a furniture professional who comes well recommended by your authorized Henkel Harris retailer. By following these simple recommendations, your Henkel Harris furniture will indeed become an heirloom investment…cherished and used for generations.

Bowen Town & Country Furniture is proud to be an authorized Henkel Harris dealer.  For the best mattress in Winston-Salem, come to Bowen. We are located at 1910 Mooney Street, right off Stratdford Road…near Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, NC.

It’s been said that “things aren’t made the way they used to be,” but at Kincaid, that’s not exactly true. While several enhancements have been made since our beginnings in 1946, we still use solid wood construction, wood-on-wood drawer movement, and hand rubbed finishes to craft our wood furniture. And the same can be said for our upholstery. Over the past 30 years, our upholstery operations in western North Carolina have built quality, bench made upholstery one piece at a time. And like Kincaid’s solid wood furniture, the upholstery has also benefited from a number of enhancements that continue to add value for the customer.

At Kincaid Furniture, things are made the way they used to be, they may even be a little better!

Solid Wood
For four generations, Kincaid Furniture has been built on a philosophy to make wood furniture in its most natural form; using Solid Wood construction.

Crafted in America
Wherever it is practical, Kincaid Furniture utilizes our U.S. facilities to make our furniture. We have been blessed to have a skilled and dedicated family of employees in western North Carolina who take great pride in crafting Kincaid Furniture. Our commitment to domestic manufacturing is very real and is a large part of who we are. Additionally, we integrate globally sourced products and components which enable us to offer a wide variety of styles and materials. In either case, the quality standards are the same.

Our national tradition has always been “work hard, save your money and you’ll be a success.”  I think that’s true in a lot of cases – not all, by any means – but a lot.  Here’s a little story about the dream coming true… in a roundabout way… but true all the same.

J. Wade Kincaid always wanted to own a grocery store.  Pursuing his dream, he went to work in a western North Carolina furniture factory in 1924 at the age of 14.  Over time, he worked his way up to plant manager, all the while saving for that grocery store.  Finally he quit the factory and opened a grocery store… only to find out that he missed the furniture business!

In 1946, he took $4,900 of his own savings, $4,900 from his father and $200 from his sister and bought a small furniture factory in Hudson, NC.  Kincaid furniture was born, with 24 people manufacturing solid wood cedar armoires and cedar chests at the rate of 20 pieces per day.  A few years later a customer in Virginia asked them to produce a five-piece bedroom suite for their store, and the rest is history.

Kincaid Furniture has been hard at work for the last 66 years, building beautiful solid wood bedroom, dining room and occasional furniture… right here in NC.  Kincaid does source certain items overseas, but the majority is American-made.  In fact, you’ll find families that have had three generations proudly working at Kincaid… and that includes the Kincaid family.  J. Wade’s grandson Steve is the president of the company today.

When it comes to American-made furniture, Kincaid’s quality is rarely matched in the industry – and they insist on the same quality standards for their imported pieces, too!  Bowen Town & Country Furniture is proud to be a licensed Kincaid Shoppe; we display a wide selection of Kincaid bedroom, dining and occasional furniture, all at the great prices Bowen has always been known for.  Come by today and let us show you some great American-made furniture with great Bowen-made prices and service.

Come see us today at Bowen Town & Country Furniture. We are located at 1910 Mooney Street, off Stratdford Road…near Hanes Mall.

My grandfather used to joke that the Civil War isn’t really over… that the Confederacy is just taking a break.  Well, we all know that isn’t the case… and while we may kid around about it, we also know that the North had the moral high ground in that war.  Forget all the romanticism about the Lost Cause… the war was the worst the US has ever been involved in and we should all be glad it turned out like it did.

If granddad was still around, I could tease him that the Yankees are coming back today… not dressed in blue and led by General Sherman, but led by some of the finest furniture I’ve seen in my 31+ years in this industry.  We got notice yesterday that our order of casual dining furniture from Palettes by Winesburg will arrive in our warehouses in the next week, straight from Ohio.  I wrote briefly about Winesburg a while back, but my writing abilities aren’t equal to the task of describing this fine American-made furniture.  Crafted from solid cherry, maple and oak, the quality has to be seen to be appreciated.

We’ll have it on display around mid-January… and we can’t wait to show it to you!

Come see us today at Bowen Town & Country Furniture. We are located at 1910 Mooney Street, off Stratdford Road…near Hanes Mall.

Bowen has landed another great supplier of American-made furniture!  We have reached an agreement with Winesburg Chair Company of Dundee, Ohio to become the area’s authorized retailer of the highly regarded Palettes by Winesburg dining furniture.

While not widely known to those outside the furniture industry, Winesburg has a stellar reputation among industry insiders.  Located in the beautiful rolling farmland and hardwood forests of Ohio’s Amish country, Winesburg began as a two-man lumber operation three generations ago.

Since then Winesburg has grown considerably.  The company still includes a lumber division which supplies fine oak, maple and cherry hardwoods to the furniture company, allowing great cost savings by “cutting out the middle man.”  In keeping with the Amish tradition of caring for the land, Winesburg actively engages in reforestation projects and other “green” activities.  Lumber not suitable for furniture is turned into high-grade shipping pallets; wood shavings are shipped to paper mills and other waste is converted to hardwood mulch.

We’re still a few weeks away from receiving our first shipments of this wonderful furniture, but you can see it now at www.palettesbywinesburg.com ; just follow the link from our website.  Space doesn’t allow listing all the features of this product, but here are a couple of things to consider…

Ever seen a dining chair where the underneath of the seat is sanded and finished just as well as the top?

Would you panic if you spilled fingernail polish remover on your current kitchen table?  Do the same to a Winesburg table and simply blot it up with a towel… the ultra-durable conversion varnish finish won’t be harmed… but the finish of 95% of the furniture in the marketplace would be destroyed.

It’ll be here soon… and we can’t wait to show it to you!
