#3: Locate Information to Help

Source: www.HomeFurnishings.com

by Deanna L. Thompson

The more the sales associate understands about you, your style and your home, the better. So do your homework–and bring it with you to the store.

“We want to find out what’s in your head, your vision of what you want,” says Rick Howard, owner of a Florida store specializing in contemporary furnishings.

Here’s what to bring along to the store:

•Pictures of rooms and furniture that reflect your style. Browse the image galleries on this site, as well as magazines and catalogs for ideas. Clip pictures from magazines and save your favorites from HomeFurnishings.com in the My Ideas section of this site. You or your sales associate should be able to pull the site up from the store.
•Samples of your paint, carpet and drapes. If you want to incorporate the colors, this will help you create a finished look.
•Room diagrams and rough measurements. This will help you map out room size and locations of doors, windows and built-in pieces. And bring measurements so you know your space limitations.
•Your goals for the room. For example, are you furnishing a formal setting for entertaining or a family room where comfort is king? Your salesperson needs to know if household members include a 6-foot-5 football player – or other high-wear users such as kids and pets, says Larry Klaben, president of an Ohio furniture company with 13 stores.
•Your budget. Don’t be reticent about sharing your spending plan. Your salesperson can guide you to choices that fit your budget. Beautiful home furnishings come in all price levels.

Rowe%20Prevue_M1By: Keith Joyce
VP of Operations

I walked into the house last night and took a long look at my sofa. It’s still an excellent piece of furniture… comfortable, handsome and in great condition. Unfortunately, I’m tired of the look… and it’s way too good to get rid of, so I suppose I’ll be looking at it for another year or two. Had I made a different choice when I ordered it, I could have a new sofa every season at a very reasonable price.

No… I’m not kidding. If I had selected a slipcover sofa from Rowe, I could have extra slipcovers and change the look whenever I want. I’d have a brightly colored, cheerful slipcover for spring and summer… maybe another in warm, earthy tones for fall and winter. Either way, I could have a fresh look simply by changing the covers. If one slipcover has been soiled, use the “time off” to have it cleaned !

Bowen Town & Country Furniture is proud to offer you access to our exclusive Studio Rowe! We have hundreds of fabrics and frame combinations to show you – you can even see your new sofa on a big-screen TV BEFORE you order it using our PreVue system. Stop by today and we’ll show you how to keep the change!

My family hates to watch television with me.  I refuse to watch “The Biggest Loser,” “Survivor,” “Dancing with the Stars” and so forth.  If I get control of the remote we’re going to watch The History Channel, Discovery, or Arts & Entertainment.  Like I said – they hate to watch TV with me.

In the interest of keeping the peace, I often record the shows I want to see and view them when everyone else has gone to bed.  I am particularly fond of a series on Discovery HD called “Treasures of the Trust.”  The British National Trust owns dozens of ancient estates…most of them were deeded to the Trust when the families who owned them could no longer afford the upkeep – or the taxes – associated with ownership of such a property.  Often the descendants of the original owners are allowed to  live in a small part of the house in return for giving it to the Trust.

My first thought when every one of these shows starts is “How in the heck did they build a house THAT big centuries ago – no cranes, no hydraulics, no backhoes, nothing except pretty basic hand tools?”  The craftsmanship is unbelievable – often “lost arts” by today’s standards.  After I think about that, my next thought is to marvel at the wealth it took to build and maintain these places…enormous houses and vast tracts of land.  Amazing…simply amazing.

I had to laugh when I watched an episode about a stately home in Northern Ireland – Castle Ward, I believe.  The husband and wife who built it couldn’t agree on an architectural style – so half of the house is Neoclassical and half is Gothic – inside and out.  It was really funny to see the differences from one side of the main hallway to the other…they couldn’t compromise, but they were wealthy enough that both of them had their way…partially.

At Bowen Town & Country Furniture, part of our job is to help you find just the right piece of furniture for your needs – so YOU don’t have to buy two of an item – and hopefully not divide your house in half.  We have some beautiful things from some of America’s finest furniture builders that just might end up in a museum someday as well…fine handmade furniture by Bucks County, Gat Creek, Keystone Collections and more.  Even if it doesn’t end up in a museum, your descendants will still treasure a fine piece of furniture.  Let us show you tomorrow’s treasures today… we’re here from 9 to 6 Monday through Friday and 9 to 5 on Saturday.

Forever Green

A healthy, stylish and affordable item to include in the decor of your home is a house plant.  Many people object to the color green when considering interior decor but consider this- GREEN is and always will be a color of nature, therefore green can be incorporated into almost any environment.  Common house plants can actually improve the air quality of your home.  According to a study by NASA, houseplants removed approximately 87% of air toxins in a 1500 square foot home in only 24 hours.  Plants can remove such toxins as Ammonia, Formaldehyde, Carbon Monoxide and Benzene.  Live house plants also impart a feeling of calm and happiness.  Some common houseplants which could improve your surroundings are: Boston Fern, Areca Palm, Reed Palm, Janet Craig Dracaena, Peace Lily and English Ivy. Try a multi height grouping of plants in a sunny corner to give your room a fresh, healthy look.
