Young America, the industry’s leader in infant and youth furniture, announced today that every crib in the Young America product line has received the GREENGUARD Children & SchoolsSM Certification.
As part of the company’s promise to be “the brand you can trust,” Young America cited children’s health as a major concern and has made a commitment to produce the safest furniture consumers can buy for their children.
According to Cristina Loth, Young America’s Vice President of Engineering Services, the health and safety of a child starts indoors. Children spend about 85 percent of their time indoors, where the air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoors.
“Naturally, the indoor air quality of a child’s room can be greatly affected by the furniture within that space,” explained Loth. “If the furniture does not meet strict emission level standards of pollutants like volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), formaldehyde and phthalates, a developing child – unlike a fully developed adult – is much more susceptible to short and long-term health risks.”
“With all of these findings and Young America’s commitment to being the industry’s leader, GREENGUARD Certification was the most logical next step for us,” added Loth.
GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) is an industry-independent, non-profit organization that specializes in improving public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air quality. Since its inception in 2001, GEI has been using environmental chamber technology to certify products for chemical emissions and uphold rigorous indoor air quality (IAQ) standards.
Products with the GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification comply with the State of California’s Department of Health Services Standard Practice (CA Section 01350) for testing chemical emissions from building products used in schools, offices and other sensitive environments. According to Dr. Marilyn Black, Founder of the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, “Emission controls are established to define low-emitting materials for environments where people spend extended periods of time and have children and sensitive adults in residence. These may include schools, daycares, healthcare facilities, or in Young America’s case, residential spaces.”
“GREENGUARD represents a highly-regarded third-party certification in the infant and youth furniture industry,” said Glenn Prillaman, Stanley Furniture’s President and COO. “We are excited and proud to be part of such an elite group of products.”
According to Prillaman, Young America cribs are just the beginning when it comes to GREENGUARD Certification. “We intend to offer our consumers an entire Young America product line that is GREENGUARD® Certified.”
