There’s no denying it – the economy is tough right now. We’re seeing stores of all types and sizes closing, and most of them are running some kind of “going out of business” sale, “inventory clearance” or a “closing” sale. The advertising would lead one to believe that the merchandise is all but being given away…but is it REALLY a bargain? Sometimes yes…but quite often, NO.
When I first got into the furniture business, I noticed that the back pages of the trade journals had ads from companies who specialized in promotions, retirement sales, going out of business sales, and the like. If your business needs a “shot in the arm,” you can engage the services of “hired guns” who will run a sale for you – they’ll bring in their own –often shoddy -merchandise, their own sales crew, run the ads, tag the merchandise, the whole ball of wax.
Unfortunately, sometimes the sales tactics and advertising are so questionable that when the traveling sales crew “rides off into the sunset,” the store owner has to go with them because he can’t show his face in town any longer.
There have been instances where a building was rented short-term for “The Retirement Sale of John Smith,” and John Smith never existed in the first place. Someone bought a few truckloads of closeouts, rented a building, and staged a sale. Many of these tactics are illegal and/or unethical, but by the time the wheels of justice begin to turn, the perpetrators are long gone. It’s kind of like that truck sitting in vacant parking lot selling furniture or rugs…just on a grand scale. Here today, gone tomorrow- with your money.
The whole “traveling circus” of sales promotion companies is based on one concept – the public believes that if a store is going out of business or offering “drastic” discounts, everything in the store is a steal. That simply isn’t always the case. Here’s the key – legally, you cannot claim a “percentage off” in an ad unless it’s a percentage off the price at which the majority of your sales of that item were made.
Here’s an example…I have a chair with a manufacturer’s suggested price of $500. My everyday price on that chair is $300. If I put the chair on sale for $250, I cannot legally advertise it as 50% off because my regular price is $300, not $500. That’s about 17% off my everyday price, not 50%.
Here’s something you CAN believe – Bowen Town & Country Furniture’s advertising strictly adheres to state and federal law. We do our best to avoid misleading anyone with our ads. Take a look at the Better Business Bureau’s records and you can see which retailers play by the rules – and go the extra mile to build a relationship with customers. Bowen Town & Country Furniture doesn’t want to just sell you ONCE – we want to be YOUR furniture store from now on.
The moral to the story? You might want to do some research before you snatch up that “bargain.” It’s entirely possible that you can buy it for less money from a store that ISN’T closing or making sensational claims – and will be there to provide service after the sale. Bowen Town & Country Furniture has served Winston-Salem and the Piedmont of NC since 1956; we’ll be here when you need us.

In short, pressure management is the process of absorbing and redistributing pressure evenly across the entire surface of your body. Pressure management is an important part of treating sleeplessness caused from back pain, lower back pain, Fibromyalgia, arthritis, and restless leg syndrome.
