At Bowen, We’re Making The Grade

My dad was a Greyhound interstate bus driver when I was growing up.  As you can imagine, he spent most of his life on the road or trying to sleep during the day so he could drive all night.  Because of dad’s schedule, lots of the time it was just me and Mom at home.  On the nights that Mom didn’t want to cook, we’d drive up to a nearby shopping center and eat at a little cafeteria (Ketner’s, I think it was) that offered good food at low prices.

The cafeteria was a mom-and-pop place and their son was the manager.  He spent most of his time running around refilling patrons’ beverages and asking about their meals.  One night I found an ENORMOUS hair – it must have been a foot long – in my salad.  I waved at him and he rushed over to the table.  I began to tell him about the hair and he said “Shhh… not so loud.  Everybody will want one!”  Mom and I died laughing and he brought me another salad.  What a wonderful job of defusing a situation that would cause some people to leave in disgust and never return! 

We ate there until they closed several years later and enjoyed every meal – especially when he’d come by our table, wink, and ask if I had “any surprises” in my salad that night. A lot of years have passed since I was served that hirsute salad, but my Mom – now 83 -delights in telling that story to this very day.  

I guess it just goes to show you that even a good restaurant –or any business – occasionally makes a slip.

Bamboo: The Greenest Grass

If you grew up in the south, you know what bamboo looks like.  We called it “reeds” or “cane” where I was raised, and the only thing we used it for was homemade fishing poles.  I caught a lot of fish out of my grandfather’s farm pond with a “cane pole.”  I found out in college that – botanically – it’s actually just really big grass.

Times have changed, however.  I’m typing this post while wearing bamboo fiber socks- a few yards away is our bedding gallery which features several mattresses with bamboo fiber covers.  Neither my socks nor our mattress covers are 100% bamboo – at this point in time the maximum bamboo content in fabrics is about 20% – but that 20% provides a lot of benefits.  It’s soft, breathes well and wicks moisture; perfect for mattress covers – and socks.

In the furniture industry, we’re used to seeing bamboo motifs in “Asian” style furniture.  Now we’re seeing the real thing… tables with bamboo tops are becoming common and bamboo flooring is “hot” in the floor covering industry.  It’s durable and has countless uses – and it’s renewable; very quickly, in fact.

I’m not a botanist and I’m not going to give you a lecture on plant biology, but bamboo is amazing stuff.  It grows almost everywhere except Europe, and spreads like wildfire; in optimal conditions it can grow FOUR FEET A DAY – and in rare instances has been documented to grow 39 INCHES IN AN HOUR for short periods of time.  How’s that for a renewable resource?

Products from bamboo?  The shoots are food for people and animals.  The sap can be made into wine.  The stalks are used in Asia for everything from houses to construction scaffolding.  Furniture, fabrics… the list is almost endless.  It’s reminiscent of all the uses Dr. George Washington Carver found for peanuts!

A story that touched us…

Back in 1972, my parents bought a leather chair and ottoman from Town & Country Furniture. This was back when the store was on the Oldtown traffic circle. I was in the 10th grade.

My dad loved that chair, And it truly was the most comfortable chair ever. When anyone came to the house, he’d make them sit down and try it out.

My dad didn’t have a long time to enjoy it, though. He died in May 1974, right before I graduated from high school and went off to college.

After college, I lived all over the US and in London, so having “the chair” would not have been possible. But about five years ago, my sister redecorated and asked me if I wanted the chair and ottoman. I couldn’t wait to bring it home!

Since then ,that beloved chair holds a place of honor in my living room. It’s in rough shape – it’s never been recovered in 38 years! – but  it’s still here. Everyone who comes here asks me about it, and I am so proud to tell them its age and what it means to me. These days, my chocolate Lab, Mocha, has grown to love it as much as I do, and just before bedtime each night, he’ll jump into it and curl up into a ball. It’s his wind-down chair, And it was my dad’s favorite place to relax.

I love the fact that my dad has been gone so long, yet I have something in my house that he loved. So i love it too, more than you can imagine!
