Furniture sources commit to showrooms through 2015

Furniture Today Staff — Furniture Today, January 26, 2009

HIGH POINT — Vaughan-Bassett Furniture and Bassett Mirror have extended their lease agreements with the International Home Furnishings Center, according to officials of the showroom building complex here.

Both leases will run to 2015.

Vaughan-Bassett also is expanding its space on the 10th floor of the IHFC’s Commerce Wing, according to Doug Bassett, vice president of sales. It will gain between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet to take it up to about 27,000 square feet, he said.

“The economy no doubt has affected the entire industry, but now is not the time to pull back,” said Bassett. “We have a lot of confidence in our products and our people. We plan to push forward and work hard to secure new market share.”

He said that signing a long-term lease with IHFC, Bassett said, was merely a reflection of the “facts on the ground. IHFC is where the vast majority of our customers spend their time during market. It’s where are customers are and always have been.”

Executives serve lunch at annual fete

Furniture Today Staff — Furniture Today, January 26, 2009

HUDSON, N.C. — Executives with Kincaid Furniture Co. dished out some cheer during the company’s annual holiday lunch for employees at its plants in Hudson and Taylorsville, N.C., in December.

In recent years, the holiday meal — a Kincaid tradition since 1946 — has been served by the furniture manufacturer’s top executives, including CEO Steve Kincaid.

This season they served ham and other traditional fare to some 358 employees. The company also used the occasion to recognize 113 employees who had perfect attendance last year, awarding them fleece vests.

“With the economy on the forefront of everyone’s mind, we felt it was more important that ever this year to show our employees how much we appreciate the work they do and remind them of how important they are to the success of our company,” said Kincaid.

One of my other blog entries highlighted Leisters Furniture, a small Pennsylvania company which turns out a real value in solid-wood occasional furniture.  Great values from small suppliers are not limited to wood furniture and upholstery.  We ran across a real find not too long ago just down the road in Thomasville, NC…right under our noses.

Carolina Mattress Guild began operations in 1991 when Neal Grigg, a long-time bedding industry professional, and his wife Kathy decided that they could “do it better” than the big manufacturers.  Applying their years of experience, they began to turn out a high-quality sleep product at very attractive prices.  The marketplace was ready for a high-quality product at a value price – there’s no huge national advertising program, no millions spent on dealer incentives – the Griggs put the money into the product.  As a result, Carolina Mattress Guild quickly outgrew their facilities.  A beautiful new plant was designed and built to meet their growing need for space, but shortly after it opened, tragedy struck.

Two years after moving into their new plant in Thomasville, a technician was installing a new quilting machine and was welding some components in place.  Sparks produced by the welding process set some of the supplies stacked nearby on fire and the flames spread rapidly, resulting in $2.8 million in damages.  Grateful for insurance but shocked at the speed and intensity of the fire, the Griggs decided to address the problem of mattress flammability and as a result, Carolina Mattress Guild was the FIRST bedding company to get a flame-retardant product to market.

Carolina Mattress Guild is one of the few manufacturers who still build a two-sided mattress.  Most companies tout the “no-flip” advantage of one-sided beds, but there are many people who believe that a bed that can be “flipped” will give longer service and a better night’s sleep.  CMG addresses that demand, and Bowen Town & Country Furniture is pleased to offer CMG’s Morning Blush Collection.  Morning Blush offers two-sided beds with a 660-coil spring unit and a foam-encased edge in firm, plush, and pillow-top models.  The 660-coil spring unit and foam-encased edge offer enhanced durability and more sleeping room by eliminating the “roll off the edge” feeling that non-foam-encased beds often have.

Visit us online, where at Bowen Town & Country Furniture, we’re proud to offer CMG products.  We feel that this is a true value in bedding, giving the consumer more for his or her money than many of the beds in today’s marketplace.  Come by soon and stretch out on a Morning Blush – you might just doze off right there.  If you do, we’ll wake you at closing time.

Regardless of economic conditions, youth furniture continues to be a steady performer at Bowen Town & Country Furniture.  We devote a significant amount of floor space to this ever-popular category.  Youth furniture is more than student desks and bunk beds; more fun and function has been built into youth furniture than you can imagine.

Bunk beds have evolved into multi-purpose items which can incorporate a full-size bed, bookcases, clothing storage, and a study area into one unit.  Some even offer TWO full-size beds instead of twins.  Stanley’s Young America  “built to grow” crib converts from crib to youth bed to full-size bed with a few simple changes.  Styles range from the traditional to the contemporary – colors range from traditional wood stains to a rainbow of colors in Stanley’s Young America “My Haven” collection.  Take a look at www.youngamerica.com .  You won’t believe the choices!

You might find it interesting to know that quite a bit of “youth” furniture ends up in second bedrooms, vacation homes, retirement homes and the like – anywhere where style and function are paramount.  The compact designs, exceptional storage, and ease of use found in youth furniture have an appeal that crosses generational boundaries.

Bowen Town & Country Furniture is proud to present a wide selection of Stanley Young America youth furniture along with selected offerings from Legacy Classics’ Legacy Kids collection and Vaughan-Bassett’s extensive youth program.  An added attraction is that over 70% of Stanley and Vaughan-Bassett furniture is MADE IN THE USA.  You’ll also be pleased to know that today’s youth furniture is manufactured to exacting safety specifications set by the United States government.  These regulations ban lead paints and construction techniques that might create hazards to the consumer, so today’s youth furniture is safer than ever.

Got little ones?  Got one on the way?  Got a grandchild?  Please visit us soon!  We’d love to show you our selection. For the finest furniture in Winston-Salem, NC visit Bowen Town & Country Furniture. We’re located at 1910 Mooney Street, right off Stratford Road, near Hanes Mall.

logoFurniture trade publications Furniture Today, Home Furnishings Business and Furniture World recently featured coverage of this summer’s international press conference hosted by Young America in Beijing, China.

On June 10, 2008, Stanley Furniture’s Vice President of International Sales and Special Markets, Brad Miller, along with Chinese Sales Representative and Furniture Retailer, Clare Zhang, hosted the “Love Young America” press conference at Cofco Plaza in Beijing, where they formally introduced the Chinese media and consumers to the Young America brand.

All in all, the conference was successful in exposing the Chinese market to the Young America brand. It also helped to further strengthen Stanley Furniture’s position as a global player – not as an importer of Chinese goods, but rather as an exporter of quality, American-made residential wood furnishings.

Come by and visit us at 1910 Mooney Street in Winston-Salem, NC where we feature Young America and many other American-made furniture manufacturers! Visit us online at BowenFurniture.com!

Happy New Year to one and all!  2008 is in the history books, folks…and I’m sure the vast majority of us aren’t sad to see it go.  There was plenty of bad news all year long; unfortunately, the mass media seems to thrive on it.  I guess good news doesn’t sell many papers or get high ratings for the “talking heads.”  I’m sure that there was plenty of good news as well – we just didn’t have the opportunity to hear it.  You may have to look, but there ARE positive things happening.  My wife of eight months was quick to remind me that I was lucky enough to marry her in ’08 which qualified it as a good year for me regardless of anything else.  I wisely replied “Yes, dear.”  I didn’t live this long by being stupid.

We bade farewell to some long-time suppliers in 2008…several of whom were like family to us.  Some were victims of “globalization” and others simply got tired, retired, and threw in the towel.  However, since we’ve been around for 53 years and are a solid, sound company (translation – we pay our bills) we were deluged with calls from new suppliers offering to “fill the holes” left by the departure of others.  We’re excited to say that we have some terrific NEW American made, product offerings here at Bowen Town & Country Furniture – Gat Creek Furniture and The Keystone Collection.  American-made solid oak, cherry, and maple furniture from the first two and the industry’s biggest collection of home theater seating –along with hundreds of recliner choices – from the latter.

Our floor displays change constantly.  If you haven’t seen what’s new at Bowen, you need to come visit us.  We’ll give you some hot coffee or a cold drink and take you on the tour!

We’re located at 1910 Mooney Street in beautiful Winston-Salem, NC…right off Stratford Road, near Hanes Mall.
