Susan and I started our business careers fresh out of college by opening a small retail fireplace shop in 1974 here in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

This picturesque community sits atop the highest mountains east of the Mississippi River, so cool summer breezes and cold snowy winters have attracted new home builders without a slowdown for more than seventy-five years a perfect setting for a fireplace shop.

We sold high-quality products and learned very early that there are people who truly recognize and appreciate the finer things in life. We offered delivery and installation service that the discount cash and carry stores couldn’t or wouldn’t do.

We learned to custom build handmade wrought iron fire screens, wood baskets, log racks and pot racks out of the tools that our maker gave us iron, fire, wood and passion.

Very quickly we had a growing, thriving business on our hands.

Word of our unique offerings spread throughout this land of mountain people, people who take pride in their work and deserve to be called artisans. We surrounded ourselves with these people and they helped us create more products.

In 1982 we started making furniture using the same natural elements of iron and wood, but added accents of brass, copper and glass& and the word continued to spread.

Today, Susan and I and our daughter, Jamie, and son, Brandon, who have both grown up in and now into our business, take great pride in the fact that our products, designed by, made by, sold by and serviced by more than 200 wonderful North Carolina mountain people are shipped throughout the world

It’s been said that “things aren’t made the way they used to be,” but at Kincaid, that’s not exactly true. While several enhancements have been made since our beginnings in 1946, we still use solid wood construction, wood-on-wood drawer movement, and hand rubbed finishes to craft our wood furniture. Vaughan-Bassett: Committed to Sustainability

Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company is committed to manufacturing its furniture in a responsible and environmentally friendly manner. Through its “One for One” program, Vaughan-Bassett has contributed 150,000 tree seedlings in 2007 to the Virginia Department of Forestry.

The planting of these 150,000 maple, oak, ash, pine, poplar and applewood trees allows the replacement of every tree used in the production of the company’s bedroom and dining room suites. It covers the trees used in all domestic production (96 percent of our total) and the 4 percent that is imported. Carl E. Garrison III, a Virginia state forester, writes: “Your idea to plant one new tree in Virginia for every tree you harvest each year is sustainability at its best.”

Vaughan-Bassett has also installed $2 million state-of-the-art rough end systems in each of its two factories. These computerized rough end systems have increased the lumber yield by over 20 percent, thereby significantly reducing the number of trees needed to produce furniture.

Vaughan-Bassett is a leader in the “Buy Local” movement. Over 99 percent of its lumber comes from within 500 miles of its factories – 80 percent from within 200 miles, reducing the carbon footprint associated with the transport of primary raw material.

Vaughan-Bassett is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and is committed to a program of continuous improvement of its systems, striving to be an industry leader in producing environmentally responsible bedroom and dining room furniture.

It’s HOT Outside!

It’s late June but the temperatures outside already feel like the middle of August!  Thank God for those cooler days once in a while and break the chain of hot ones.

If you’ll pardon the pun, no one is lukewarm about hot weather… most people either love it or hate it.  Regardless of how you feel about it, extremely hot weather can be dangerous, especially to the ill or elderly.  It’s important to stay hydrated; you have to have water to produce the perspiration that is so important in keeping us cool.

I’ve often wondered how roofers, construction workers and highway crews manage to work outside in the South’s summer heat and humidity… they’re a tougher breed than this writer.  You’ll seldom see a crew without those big orange or yellow Igloo coolers full of ice water. Even with frequent breaks, that’s a tough, tough way to make a living.
